Check fluid levels before every use: Verify engine oil and hydraulic oil are at proper levels to protect internal parts and ensure smooth splitting.
Clean debris regularly: Remove wood chips, bark and dirt from the beam, wedge area, and engine/muffler to prevent buildup and reduce fire hazards.
Inspect hydraulic components: Check hoses, fittings, seals, and clamps for leaks, cracks or wear — tighten or replace as needed to maintain pressure and safety.
Lubricate moving parts: Apply light oil to pivot points, bearings, and the beam slide area to reduce friction and keep components moving smoothly (best practice).
Tighten fasteners: Before use, check and tighten all nuts, bolts and hitch hardware to prevent loosening during operation.
Warm up in cold weather: If hydraulic oil is cold (<10 °F / –12 °C), cycle the ram slowly several times to warm fluid before splitting to avoid pump strain.
Protect from the elements: Store the splitter in a dry, covered area when not in use; consider a weather‑resistant cover to reduce corrosion and prolong life.
Periodic engine care: Change engine oil and air filter per manufacturer schedule; fresh fuel and spark plug checks improve starting and performance (standard gasoline engine practice)
